DELTA TWP. – A General Motors Co. supplier’s plans to invest $7.1 million in its West Mt. Hope Highway plant would create 192 new jobs.
Norplas Industries, Inc., a division of Magna Exteriors and Interiors of America, Inc., is proposing to construct a 70,200-square-foot manufacturing addition at its Delta Township facility.
Magna opened the $75 million, 290,000-square-foot exterior parts plant, called DexSys, at 5589 W. Mt. Hope Hwy. last fall.
On Monday Delta Township’s Board of Trustees approved a 12-year tax abatement, a 50 percent reduction in taxes on improvements and additions to the facility.
The planned expansion will include the addition of a generator, compressor and new dock space, along with 3,500-square-foot in office space and added parking.
Tracy Fuerst, director of communications for Magna, said Wednesday that details about the time line for new jobs and the pay range aren’t available yet.
“It’s a little bit to premature to have some of those details,” she said.
The plant manufactures front and rear fascias for the vehicles made at General Motors’ two local assembly plants — Lansing Delta Township, which builds the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia crossovers; and Lansing Grand River, home to the Cadillac ATS and CTS luxury car lines.
“Norplas’ primary product consists of molded, painted, assembled, and sequenced bumper fascia systems, rocker panels, painted roofs and other trim pieces…” said Brian Thelen, Delta Township’s assessing director, in a memo to the township board.
Construction at the facility could begin this year, said Fuerst.
In a memo sent to Delta Township’s Board of Trustees the company said, “New employment opportunities will be concentrated primarily in manufacturing operations.”
The company already employs 310 people.
“I think this is great news,” said Delta Township Supervisor Ken Fletcher. “That things are going well and that they’re already adding more jobs.”
The plant already has one tax abatement in place, tied to the initial construction of the facility.
