Rumors that SolarCity is moving from San Mateo to Las Vegas are unfounded, the company said. In fact, Solar City says it’s interested in more space on the Peninsula.
Yesterday the Peninsula market was abuzz with news that SolarCity had put 85,000 square feet on the sublease market on Clearview Way, the former Visa campus that Lowe Enterprises repositioned a few years ago. The word was that the solar giant was moving to take advantage of Nevada’s business-friendly tax environment.
But real estate sources told the Business Times that it’s Akamai, SolarCity’s neighbor on Clearview Way, that is looking to sublease office space. Akamai is searching for a tenant to take 66,943 square feet at 3125 Clearview Way and 17,364 square feet at 3155 Clearview Way. The larger space expires in October of 2015 and the smaller in October of 2018.
So is Akamai moving to Las Vegas? No. Akamai’s San Mateo employees will eventually move to two other Bay Area offices — to the north in San Francisco and to the south in Silicon Valley. Akamai is headquartered in Cambridge.
By the way, SolarCity spokesman Jonathan Bass told San Francisco Business Times green tech reporter Lindsay Riddell that the firm may have a vested interest in Akamai’s plans. “We are looking at potentially taking over part of that building,” he said. SolarCity has added 1,000 employees in the past year.
